Consul Papanikolaou speaks to the staff of the World Affairs Council of Houston

Thursday, 07 June 2012

On Wednesday, June 6th, Consul Papanikolaou spoke to the staff of the World Affairs Council of Houston as part of their Summer Lunch Briefing Series held every Wednesday.

The topic of discussion was entitled “European Debt Crisis: The View from Greece,” and was chosen for a more holistic view of the current financial situation in Greece from a Greek official rather than relying solely on what the American media is providing. The Consul gave a speech and presentation in regards to the present status of the Greek financial crisis and insight to the future of the Greek economy, followed by a brief Q&A session.

His main message was that the financial crisis in Greece is part of a systemic crisis that has hit Europe, a crisis that requires immediate and collective effort from the leading countries of the euro zone.  Without running away from the Greek citizens’ share of responsibilities the Consul said that if the Greek and Spanish situation doesn’t improve Eurozone is severely threatened with dissolution ending the long series of brave European political and economic endeavors of the last 60 years.
