2nd Hellenic Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation

Congress Center, NCSR “Demokritos”

Monday 30 June – Friday 4 July 2014

The 2nd Hellenic Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation organized by the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” will take place from June, 30th to July 4th, 2014 at the campus of the Research Center.

The event envisages opportunities for the development of links and affiliations between members of the Greek research community and industry as well as distinguished scientists living and working abroad. The primary objective of the event is to combine research networking with effective brokerage of the Greek research and industrial potential so as to facilitate the development of scientific collaborations for the exploitation of innovative technologies and research results. The NCSR “Demokritos” and the organising committee aspire to establish a “Diaspora hub” for Greek Scientists and professionals by organizing a series of workshops during the first week of July each year.

In order to consolidate this effort, the Demokritos Scientific Excellence and Innovation Award will be awarded to a distinguished scientist from the Greek Diaspora the first Thursday of July, each year. The first recipient of the prize is Iosif Sifakis, Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Director of the RiSD Laboratory.

This year, the 2nd Hellenic Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation will focus on the following thematic areas:

Nuclei and Elementary Particles for Scientific Discoveries and Innovation

The progress in Particle, Astroparticle and Nuclear Physics research during the recent years is unprecedented. A plethora of new experimental techniques for the study of the microcosm and the Universe have been developed and/or perfected. Long awaited experimental results have emerged from the data analysis, such as the Higgs boson and High Energy cosmic neutrinos. Sophisticated theoretical models have been devised to explain the workings of nature and the evolution of the Universe. Radioactive beams open new avenues in nuclear physics research cancelling a host of well-established theories!

At the same time the most advanced technologies have been utilized and/or developed to cope with the ever increasing demands of data taking and analysis inevitably pushing forward the frontier of technology innovation and practical applications to other sciences and industry.

The workshop aims to bring together scientists with expertise in the areas of Nuclear and Particle Physics to discuss the current progress on scientific and technological innovations in these fields.

Patenting and Licensing

Seminar-Course on:

The technological demands of the experiments in Particle, Astro-particle and Nuclear Physics result in advanced innovations, which often lead to important inventions and patents. CERN has a wide experience on the related international patenting and licensing.

The course includes a series of seminars on patenting and licensing by Dr. Jean-Marie LeGoff,former Head of the office of Technology Transfer of CERN, chairman of HEPTech, the Technology Transfer Network of organisations active in particle, astro-particle and nuclear physics and expert mandated by WIPO on intellectual property matters. The course will have the following structure:

Ø Setting the scene: IP policy and explaining its use to the various stakeholders

Ø IP protection why, for what purpose?

Ø Successful licensing: to illustrate what happens between academia and industry in case of exploitation of research results.

This course is addressed to the Industrial as well as to the Academic/Research sector. It is organized by CERN and the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of Demokritos.

Advances in targeted Drug Delivery systems & biomaterials

Biomaterials are relevant to areas such as cancer diagnosis and therapy, implantable devices, drug delivery systems, gene vectors, bionanotechnology, implants and tissue engineering. Drug delivery systems are methods used to get drugs into the body avoiding the traditional drugs' side effects improving in that way the drug circulation time, efficacy and specificity. Common types of drug delivery systems include inorganic and organic polymers and can deliver different therapeutic entities like genes, drugs, proteins, cells and etc.

Generic Pharmaceuticals: from R&D to society

Generic pharmaceutical industries is a dynamic part of the Greek economy and irrespective of the economic issues of this industrial sector of Greek economy in relation to the health care and health policies, the production of generic pharmaceuticals has very demanding development R & D procedures. The scope of the workshop on Generic Pharmaceuticals is to bring together members of the industrial sector, working on R&D activities, members of the scientific community of “Demokritos”, scientists from other Greek research centers and Universities and scientists from abroad in order to establish and explore possible ways to collaborate and find out the real needs of Greek Pharmaceutical industries. Also we expect scientists working in companies that develop instruments for studying pharmaceuticals to participate and present the current trends in pharmaceutical instrumentation.

Safety & Security

The objectives of this workshop are to highlight research themes in the “Security area”, which may be:

1. to develop the technologies and knowledge for building capabilities needed to ensure the security of citizens from threats such as terrorism, natural disasters, and crime, while respecting fundamental human rights and privacy;

2. to ensure optimal and concerted use of available and evolving technologies to the benefit of civil European/Worldwide security;

3. to stimulate the cooperation of providers and users for civil security solutions;

4. to improve the competitiveness of the European security industry;

5. to deliver mission-oriented research results to reduce security gaps.

Opening new frontiers for advanced research and innovative business: the Oil & Gas industry in Greece

The Oil & Gas industry is generally divided into two major sectors: upstream and downstream. Upstream, also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector, includes all the exploration activities, i.e., searching for hydrocarbons, drilling of exploratory wells and bringing the hydrocarbons (crude oil and gas) to the surface. Downstream, on the other hand, is the refining of the crude oil, processing of the gas, marketing and distribution of the final products to the market.

The upstream part of the industry is not well known to the Greek research community as there were very limited exploration activities in Greece. As we are finally entering the era of hydrocarbons exploration, it is important to connect the two communities: explorationists and researchers.

This thematic area will:

· Introduce the upstream industry to the audience: it will present the upstream business model, describe the main exploration techniques and the technical challenges that the industry faces today.

· Present the current status of the upstream industry in Greece and the new opportunities for research and business innovators.

· Present the relevant research activities in Demokritos.

Introduction to Data Science for Agriculture & Food Safety

The workshop "Introduction to Data Science for Agriculture & Food Safety" aims to introduce participants to the use and exploitation of open data. Based on these data, applications will be developed during the Hackathon that will take place in the coming days. During the course, there will be presentations on agronomic research, education and literature, with an emphasis on food safety and food security.

The event is aimed at science researchers (physics, chemistry, agronomy, biology, mathematics, or statistics), people involved in the analysis of experimental data or involved in applications of artificial intelligence, as well as IT specialists.
