Ambassador Panagopoulos participated in the AHI ceremony commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of the destruction of Smyrna (Washington DC, 10/22/2012)

Thursday, 25 October 2012

Ambassador Panagopoulos participated in the ceremony organized by the American Hellenic Institute, commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of the destruction of Smyrna, along with many members of the Greek-American community (Washington DC, 10/22/2012).
The commemoration took place at the grave of the former United States Consul General to Smyrna, George Horton, who is interred in Georgetown’s Oak Hill Cemetary. Horton’s 1926 book, “The Blight of Asia”, was among the contemporary accounts that depicted what truly happened in Smyrna.
In his speech, Ambassador Panagopoulos praised Horton’s contribution to the accurate representation of the actual events and underscored that nations must try to chart a future of peace, without forgetting history.
