Thessaloniki International Wine & Spirits Competition
February 24th -26th, 2015

The 15th International Wine Competition of Thessaloniki was successfully completed, along with the 1st International Spirits of Vitivinicultural Origin Competition, giving strong evidence that is has become a major institution for Greek wine & spirits. The Competition is organized by the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard in collaboration with Helexpo – TIF, under the auspices of the O.I.V. (International Organization of Vine and Wine).

The main characteristic of this year’s competition was the excellent quality of the samples submitted, a great number of which achieved the rate for a medal. In this year’s competition, 35 foreign and Greek wine tasters (enologists, sommeliers and journalists) tasted 560 wines from Greece and 6 other countries: Brazil, Slovakia, Cyprus, Germany, China and the Czech Republic and 34 spirits from Greece and Cyprus.

In the awards ceremony, held on Saturday, February 28th, the medals were awarded as follows: 1 Grand Gold medal, 81 Gold medals and 75 Silver medals. The Greek wine producers awarded the ‘Greek Wine Industry Award 2015’ to the writers of the book ‘Wine Grapes’: Jancis Robinson MW, Julia Harding MW and Dr Jose Vouillamoz. The book reports more than 70 grape varieties after a meticulous count in the Greek vineyards.

The Gold medal awarded wines were presented to the public at an open wine tasting on Sunday March 1st, during the Detrop – Oenos exhibition in Thessaloniki.

In the past 15 years world class wine professionals have accepted the invitation to judge at the International Thessaloniki Wine Competition and even before the competition was over declared an interest in being invited back, totally fascinated by Greek wine. Turning important people into dedicated ambassadors in just a few days, could well be the ultimate proof that TIWC is now an integral part of the Modern Greek Wine Renaissance.
